THEME: ACTIVE NATURE 


Vejle Ådal Valley is one of the most scenic areas in Denmark and also the deepest gorge in the area. There are many ways to explore the area’s natural beauty and there are many heritage attractions to visit.

Suggestion 1: Explore Vejle Ådal with a ranger: Experience the amazing natural scenery and rich wildlife of the Vejle Valley in the company of a ranger, who offers inspiring tours of the area. Visit Randbøl Hede (heath) and Frederikshåb Plantage (woodland) or the historic Ancient Road, and much more.

Suggestion 2: Bike or hike along the Bindeballestien Route:
The Bindeballestien Route – Regional Bicycle Route 36 – follows the old tracks of the Vandelbane Railway from Vejle to Bindeballe close to the Ancient Road – a 23-kilometer stretch. Experience Bindeballe Købmandsgård (the Bindeballe Merchant’s Yard), which dates back to the age of the Vandelbane Railway (1897-1957), the sculpture park Tørskind Grusgrav, and the Viking Age Ravning Bridge.

THEME: THE GOOD AND HEALTHY LIFE (target group: adults)

Suggestion 1: Explore Vejle Ådal Valley with a ranger: Experience the amazing natural scenery and rich wildlife of the Vejle Ådal Valley in the company of ranger and heritage officer Peer Høgsberg, who offers inspiring tours of the area. Discover the sculpture park Tørskind Grusgrav, the barrow of the Egtved Girl, or the Viking Age Ravning Bridge. 

Suggestion 2: Frederikshåb Møllepark: The Frederikshåb Mill Park is located in an area of natural beauty by the Torgunsminde Farm. The owners designed their first windmill in the 1990s as a garden feature. But they didn’t stop there and now their parkland includes nine windmills and two watermills. All are scaled 1:2 and perfectly functional.

The Jelling Area: The town of Jelling is best known for the Jelling Monuments from the Viking Age but the area also has far more to offer. There are many artist studios and there are areas of natural beauty around the Fårup Lake

Suggestion 1: World Heritage: The Jelling Monuments and Royal Jelling: The town of Jelling is home to some of Europe’s finest Viking Age monuments: two royal tumuli (i.e. burial mounds) and two Viking rune stones along with Jelling Church, which are all listed as UNESCO World Heritage. The Royal Jelling visitors’ centre relates the amazing story of the monuments. The director of the centre will guide you through the exhibition in an inspiring and informative way. 

Suggestion 2: Vindelev Kro og Galleri: Experience the art of Knud Nielsen, covering more than six decades of his oeuvre. Vindelev Kro og Galleri (Vindelev Inn and Gallery) is currently managed by Knud Nielsen’s widow, Jonna Borum, who has kept the unique studio just the way it was when the artist was alive. Enjoy a delicious meal at the inn where everything is homemade. Please note: only open by prior arrangement.

Suggestion 3: Hopballe Mølle: Hopballe Mill is located in an area of natural beauty in Grejsdalen (Grejs Valley). Hopballe has been the site of watermills for 600 years. Today the Hopballe mill is home to a farm shop. They also rear poultry and their famous chickens are on the menu in their restaurant and café. 

Brejning: The small town of Brejning by Børkop has since 1899 been home to a palatial estate that used to be a mental institution called De Kellerske Anstalter. These magnificent palatial edifices play witness to an unusual chapter in Denmark’s history.

Suggestion 1: The museum Kellers Minde: Denmark’s only heritage museum dedicated to mental healthcare. 

Suggestion 2: Comwell Kellers Park & Spa: The hotel is Denmark’s first five-starred conference and spa hotel. The totally refurbished heritage hotel is located in one of the palatial buildings that used to house the mental institution De Kellerske Anstalter. Today the hotel features exclusive spa and gourmet experiences. Close by your find Comwell Kellers Park Golf Club.

THEME: FUN AND LEARNING (target group: families with young children )

Givskud Zoo: A large safari park of international standard offering close-up animal experiences. Givskud Zoo features more than 700 animals, representing over 70 different species.

Suggestion 1: Safari: An exciting safari guided by a ranger where you get right up close to species from all around the world. You’ll experience feeding time in a number of different habitats. The trip will be a combination of walking and bus rides (visitor’s own coach).

Suggestion 2: Morning or evening visit behind the scenes: Experience a behind-the-scenes visit to a number of zoo stables guided by rangers who relate exciting stories about the animals. The trip will primarily be on foot but transport around the park will be by bus (visitor’s own coach).

Økolariet is a hands-on experience centre for natural history, the environment, energy and innovation. The aim of Økolariet is to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly ways of living. The interactive exhibits cover an area of around 2000 m². A guided tour of Økolariet is recommended.

The Randbøldal Museum is located in a former watermill in the village of Randbøldal. Water has always been the livelihood of the area. And today the watermill is a museum dedicated to waterpower. Here you can learn how to harness the power of water using a waterwheel and sluices. The former warehouse has been converted into heritage workshops for papermaking, textile spinning and waterpower.

Give-Egnens Museum: The Give Heritage Museum is dedicated to the life of local heath farmers and presents changing exhibitions. The permanent collections are displayed in an engaging way in environments rather than display cases. They are featured so to give the impression of the way the farmers worked and lived.

THEME: ACTIVITIES

Suggestion 1: Sailing trips in the Vejle Inlet: Throughout the summer, VisitVejle arranges sailing trips in the Vejle Inlet on board the cutter Tenna II. Trips take place every Wednesday (and probably Thursday) and on every second Saturday between June and mid-August.

Suggestion 2: Horse-drawn carriage: From mid-June to mid-August, VisitVejle arranges trips in horse-drawn carriages in the scenic setting of Vejle and the Vejle Ådal Valley. On Tuesdays trips go to the Bindeballe area, on Thursdays to the woodlands of Sønderskoven by Vejle and to Randbøl Heath.

Suggestion 3: Vintage train rides: Vintage trains huff and puff through the scenic route from Vejle through the valley of Grejsdalen to the town of Jelling. A short stop will be made in Jelling. The vintage trains run on Sundays and selected Tuesdays between early July and mid-August.

Suggestion 4: Viking voyage on Fårup Lake: Throughout the summer you can explore Fårup Lake on board the impressive Viking Ship, Jelling Orm. Here you can row with giant oars under the watchful eye of the Viking helmsman.

THEME: RECURRENT EVENTS

Suggestion 1: Jelling Music Festival: During the last weekend of May, people of all ages convene on Jelling to listen to good music. The Jelling Music Festival draws 22,000 visitors.

Suggestion 2: Tirsbæk Green Game: In June the manor Tirsbæk Gods by the shores of the Vejle Inlet invites visitors to enjoy country activities such as a lumberjack show, falconers, sailing competitions, carp angling, horseback hunting with dogs, clay pigeon shooting, and much more.

Suggestion 3: Viking market at the Jelling Monuments: In July, Jelling is host to the annual Viking Market with living workshops, stalls, riding shows and a theme church service. Here you can test your talents within bread baking, archery and as a Viking warrior.

Suggestion 4: In the footsteps of the Egtved Girl: Each year in July, a Bronze Age Festival is held – In the Footsteps of the Egtved Girl – by her barrow. You can experience Bronze Age crafts at the market place and settlement. There will be sacrificial ceremonies and playing of the ”lur”. The Egtved Girl will tell her story and dance. And there will be many other activities for visitors of all ages.

Suggestion 5: Crazy about Water in Vejle: An August day full of activity around the Vejle Inlet. Events include the traditional Munkebjerg Hill Climb featuring magnificent vintage sports cars that meander up the serpentine road in the Munkebjerg Forest. Also an exclusive Inlet market. And a swimming competition in which hundreds of competitors swim across the inlet.

MISCELLANEOUS

The Experience Pass
: VisitVejle has in collaboration with a number of other tourism organisations in the Triangle Region launched an Experience Pass, which is to encourage visitors to enjoy sights and events across the entire region. The pass, which is currently a pilot project, offers discounts at several attractions in the municipality of Vejle, such as Skærup Zoo, Legelandet, Givskud football golf, Skjern Ås kanofart (Skjern River Canoe Hire) and the Vejle Art Museum.
