Landmark churches in the Vejle region

In the Vejle region you’ll come across one landmark church after another, the oldest of which date back to the 12th century. Visitors are often rewarded with the most amazing medieval frescoes. And many of the contemporary churches are also worth visiting, not least due to their remarkable design.

Bredsten ChurchBredsten Church
Erected in the 12th century. Redesigned in the 18th century in the Baroque style. Onion-shaped spire. Of special interest are the pulpit and the altarpiece.

Brejning ChurchBrejning Church
Erected in 1965-67. Unique for its
clean-lined architectural simplicity - interior as
well as exterior.

Gadbjerg ChurchGadbjerg Church
Erected in about 1200. Romanesque/late Gothic style. Of special interest are the baptismal font from 1575 and a Renaissance canopy from 1643.

Give ChurchGive Church
Erected in 1100. Romanesque/Gothic style. Of special interest are the pulpit from about 1600, the granite baptismal font, and the altarpiece. 

Givskud ChurchGivskud Church
Erected in the 12th century. Romanes-que /Gothic style. Of special interest are the Romanesque granite baptismal font and the church bell in the nave.

Grejsdal Church, VejleGrejsdal Church, Vejle
Erected in 1959-1961. Gracing the hillside, this clean-lined modern church features glass bricks that imbue the interior with changing plays of light.

Gårslev ChurchGårslev Church
Erected in the 12th century. Romanes-que/late Gothic style. Of special interest are a large oak church box and the 17th century wood carvings. 

Jelling ChurchJelling Church
Erected in the 12th century. The Roman-esque church and the Jelling monuments – the two rune stones and burial mounds – are listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

Lindeballe ChurchLindeballe Church
Erected in the 13th century. Romanesque style. Ruins of the medieval brick kiln where the masonry used to build the church was kilned.

Nørup ChurchNørup Church
Erected in the 13th century. Restyled in the 18th century and richly adorned with unique works of art from the Baroque. Onion-shaped spire.

Ringive ChurchRingive Church
Erected in the 13th century. Romanesque style. The austere style reflects the meagre lifestyle of the moorland. Of special interest is the pulpit.

Sct. Nicolai Church, VejleSct. Nicolai Church
Vejle's oldest building from 1250. Late Gothic style. Choir and steeple from the 19th century. On display is a ‘bog body’ of an Iron Age woman. 23 human skulls embedded in the north wall.

Sct. Norberts Church, VejleSct. Norberts Church, Vejle
Erected in 1924 in the Neo-Gothic style. Of special interest is the church interior with its baptismal font, bas-reliefs, and wood carvings.

Skibet ChurchSkibet Church
Erected in the 12th century. Romanes-que/Gothic style. Of special interest are the Romanesque baptismal font and the 13th century frescoes.

Skærup ChurchSkærup Church
First recorded in the 14th century. Exten-sively refurbished. Of special interest are the altarpiece, the baptismal font, and the tomb monuments.

Smidstrup ChurchSmidstrup Church 
Erected in the 12th century. Romanesque style. Of special interest are the 16th century frescoes, the 15th century altar and the organ loft from 1701.

Thyregod ChurchThyregod Church
Erected in the 12th century. Romanes-que/Gothic interior. This is where leading Danish Lutheran thinker N. F. S. Grundtvig was confirmed in 1798. Of special interest is the church bell from around 1235.

Vester ChurchVester Church
Erected in the 12th century. Romanesque style. Of special interest are the baptismal font and its basin from 1575. The cemetery is designed as a map of the parish as it once was.

Øster Nykirke, KollemortenØster Nykirke, Kollemorten
Erected in the 12th century. Romanesque style. The highest point of any church in Denmark at 120 metres above sea level. Of special interest are the tympanum above the entrance, the altarpiece and the pulpit from 1632.
