Prehistoric monuments in the Vejle region

History is a very living part of the Vejle region where you can visit many prehistoric and historic monuments, from barrows and rune stones to ancient roads, castle ruins and much more. Some of the most spectacular attractions are the Ancient Road and the rune stones in Jelling, the Viking Age Ravning Bridge and the Bronze Age barrow of the Egtved Girl.

The village of Jelling is home to Europe’s most striking Viking Age monuments: two large barrows and two rune stones erected by kings Gorm the Old and Harald Bluetooth.

The barrow contained some of Denmark’s best preserved Bronze Age archaeological finds. The barrow is a reconstruction and the small museum relates the story of the grave.

In the meadows of Ravning you find two reconstructed bridgeheads from the mighty valley bridge that King Harald Bluetooth constructed in Vejle Ådal in 979 AD. Visitor’s centre.

The ruins of the brick kiln constructed by Black Friars in the 1300s, which supplied the red brick used to build their Dominican monastery.

The runic inscription on the Rygbjerg Stone has been called Denmark’s first love poem. The rune stone stands on a small barrow.

The ring fortress Troldborg Ring was constructed in 100-200 BC surrounded by ramparts and a moat. It lies 70 metres above the valley Vejle Ådal.

The old castle mounds mark the vestiges of a Viking Age fortification, which offered protection from hostile sea attacks.

The moorland area takes its name from the four Bronze Age barrows. Legend has it that a local king was buried in the Kong Rans Høj.
