Højen and Mølholm River Valleys
The day hiking route Højen and Mølholm river valleys, which is 19 kilometers long, takes you through beautiful nature that merges with the city of Vejle. Here, you will pass through meltwater valleys with steep forests and open grasslands, along streams, as well as rivers and fjords.
Højen River Valley
The valley is a small natural paradise. Here, conditions are optimal for birds, fish, and insects. The forest along the Højen River is designated as a biodiversity forest, promoting natural woodland. In the environment around the river, you can encounter stoneflies, caddisflies, and mayflies - including the very rare 'Stream-born Mayfly'. Among the birds, you might spot the dipper, the grey wagtail, and the kingfisher. The river is home to the red-spotted brown trout, and in the autumn, sea trout migrate up from Vejle Fjord to spawn. This section features beautiful meadows with steep open areas through the valley.
Mølholm River Valley
Here, you will find a beautiful and varied terrain with hilly slopes on open grasslands between thickets and forests. At the bottom of the valley runs the Mølholm River. In May and June, rare orchids bloom right next to the main path. You can see buzzards searching for prey and herons hunting by the pond. In the morning, you might encounter deer, and at night, foxes and badgers are active.
Sønderskoven Forest
Sønderskoven is Vejle's green oasis. Families and fitness enthusiasts gather here at the forest playground and mountain bike trails. Many also use the forest for walking or running, or take advantage of the dog park. The many wild deer are not very shy and can often be seen in the early or late light of the day.
Kongens Kær
In the large wetland area close to the bustling city life, more than 200 bird species have been recorded. From the smallest wren to the large sea eagle. Paths, bridges, and the lookout tower provide great opportunities to experience the beautiful valley landscape.
