Useful tips and practical answers for your trip into nature
Where can I pitch a tent or spend the night in nature?
In Denmark, you cannot pitch a tent just anywhere in nature. You should therefore always use places designed for outdoor overnight stays, such as nature campsites and shelters. At udeliv.vejle.dk, you can find places to stay overnight, as well as facilities such as fire pits, toilets and water.
What should I do with toilet visits and waste in nature?
Always take your waste with you if there is no bin on site. When you leave, nature should look just as nice as when you arrived. If there is no toilet, please show consideration for nature and other guests. On the map above, you can see whether each shelter or nature campsite has a toilet and bin.
Can I bring my dog when I'm in nature?
As a general rule, you are welcome to bring your dog outdoors, but always remember to keep it on a leash.
In some areas, special rules may apply, such as on beaches, in private forests, at shelter sites, in dog forests and other nature areas.
Find more information about “nature with dogs” on Vejle Municipality’s website. You can also read more about the dog forests in the municipality and find them on the map.
Can I light a fire in nature?
Many primitive overnight sites by shelters and nature campsites in Vejle Municipality have facilities such as fire pits and water taps. When lighting a fire in nature, always remember:
- Only use the established fire pits
- Do not light a fire if there is a fire ban during summer
- Make sure the fire is completely extinguished before leaving the site or going to sleep
- Do not burn waste
- Only use firewood if it is clearly available for free use

Do I need to book a shelter in advance?
Some shelters in Vejle Municipality must be booked in advance, while others operate on a first-come, first-served basis. You should therefore always check what applies to each individual shelter before heading out.
You can find a map of the municipal shelters at udeliv.vejle.dk. Here you can also see the address, facilities and booking information.
Some shelters are managed by the Danish Nature Agency and can be booked at book.naturstyrelsen.dk.
First come, first served – who has the right to use the shelter?
If a shelter cannot be booked, the first-come, first-served principle generally applies. If you arrive first, you can use the shelter, but please be considerate – especially if there is plenty of space or others arrive late. Shelters and primitive overnight sites are typically intended for individuals, couples, families and smaller groups.
Good shelter etiquette means sharing the space when it makes sense, keeping noise levels down in the evening and leaving the site as you would like to find it yourself.
